This 18 story, 3 building project in Birmingham, Alabama has its share of challenges in this episode. When the guys say that the “geology is challenging”, they’re talking about rock formations that the preconstruction surveys did not show. Add that to how each new phase of the project means there are more people, more equipment and more supplies on site, and you know these guys are up for a challenge.
Meet Jimmy Shaw, project manager, and Greg Brooks, superintendent with BL Harbert. They discuss the challenges, and the plans to overcome! Also meet Patrick Steele, project engineer with Cortland Partners. He discusses his typical day on the VESTA project which includes using his Robotic Total Station by Leica Geosystems. Finally, meet Cody Jennings, a 3rd generation driller and superintendent with Russo Corporation. Cody and his team are responsible for all of the foundation and drilled shaft caisson work which makes sure the whole condo complex will stay put.
The Vesta Apartment Development is being constructed by BL Harbert International and Cortland Partners. Vesta is slated for completion early in 2019. As the tallest structure under construction in Birmingham in 30 years, it’s located on historic Highland Avenue. 390,000 square feet with 318 luxury units in the highrise and 5-story midrise building, plus a 502 space parking structure.
